Good climate at Dubai coastline - BaySystems delivers rigid PU foam system for district cooling at Dubai Waterfront

Dubai Waterfront is more than just another construction project. Its aim is to become a new district at the coast of Dubai, in front of the Jebel Ali Palm. Nearly double the size of Hong Kong it will be inhabited by almost 1.5 million people. For this huge venture the remaining 15 kilometers of the natural coast will be developed as well as 55 kilometers of new coast will be built into the sea which means a growth of 70 kilometers at Dubai’s coastline. To guarantee that not only electricity is provided but also chilled water for the cooling of the buildings the developer has chosen Abu Dhabi Pipe Factory (ADPF) to deliver pre-insulated pipes for the district cooling system of the area. During the construction of the project 18 kilometers of pipes need to be delivered on a monthly basis.

ADPF operates since 1981 and has become the pioneer in its field within the UAE. One of its local partners is BaySystems Pearl, which has developed suitable polyurethane systems for the insulation of the pipes and pipe joints. BaySystems® is Bayer MaterialScience's umbrella brand for its global polyurethane systems business, which now includes a global network of 30 systems houses and embraces many decades of know-how in the field of polyurethanes in conjunction with close customer support.

The pipes that are laid in the ground are made of glass fiber reinforced polyester (GRP), a special plastic material that provides a high resistance to corrosion and degradation and is significantly lighter than steel. The pipes arrive at the respective construction site already pre-insulated with the Baytherm® polyurethane foam system, a special grade of highly effective insulation foam from BaySystems Pearl. Once installed in the ground the pipe joints get filled up with a special Baytherm® polyurethane system. This system ensures a continuous insulation throughout the length of the installed pipeline.

BaySystems not only delivers innovative products for the pipe insulation industry but has a proven track record of experience globally. Thanks to its global network of BaySystems systems houses the company is able to provide for example local polyurethane systems that are adjusted to the individual requirements of each customer. In Dubai, Bayer MaterialScience has therefore established BaySystems Pearl, a joint venture with Pearl Insulation LLC. “We have developed Baytherm® systems for district cooling applications, as this concept provides an effective and energy saving way of creating a comfortable atmosphere inside of residential and commercial buildings”, explains Dr. Marc Schuetze, Head of Business Development BaySystems Pearl.

And the demand is still growing: ADPF contracts comprise approximately 400 kilometers of district cooling pipelines for projects such as Jumeirah Lake Towers, Maritime City and Jumeirah Village. “We have partnered with BaySystems Pearl as we require high quality insulation material and fast response to the requirements of our different projects”, describes Manzur Ahmed, QA/QC Manager at ADPF the relationship with BaySystems Pearl.
